What Are the Best Books to Use in Guided Reading for Kindergarten
And then you think you don't have plenty books to showtime Reading Workshop...
Well, I bet you do! Really think about how many books you have--I bet it'due south more you think! But if yous're wanting to expand your classroom library, and don't take bucketfuls of coin to spend, hither are a few ideas:
Talk to Your Chief
If you are truly interested in starting Reading Workshop and feel like y'all need more books, talk to your principal. Prove him the enquiry that supports it. Tell him your plan. You might be surprised. There may be some extra money that he is itching to spend! (It wouldn't take that much. You tin can get a 50 book drove from Scholastic for nether $200). Or, at that place may be a stash of books hiding somewhere in your school that yous tin utilise to beefiness up your library. (Of form, I do realize that your principal might, indeed, be a female. Aforementioned thing applies).
If you lot never ask, the respond will ever be NO!
Be Smart!
Spend your coin wisely. Remember about what kinds of books you want to buy. I similar to focus on just a few types of books at a time, until I have enough of those to make a whole basket. For instance, correct at present, I'grand looking specifically for Frog and Toad books,Mem Fox books and Ezra Jack Keats books. But I don't need anymore Dr. Seuss or Clifford books, so I won't waste my money on those.
I really try to buy the best quality literature that I can--stories that kids will autumn in love with and can larn from! I would rather accept aneKevin Henkes book than 3 Disney Princess orTransformer books.
Choose paperbacks whenever possible. They're cheaper, take up less space in your baskets and are easy to repair.
Use Scholastic Volume Club Points!
I've gotten more than books from Scholastic than from anywhere else--either for costless or actually cheap. Even when I worked in lower-income schools, my parents still ordered from Scholastic. Not only do I love the free books, but I truly believe that it's an excellent way for families to get expert quality books for a reasonable toll. And research shows that the more books children have in their homes, the improve readers they get. And then it's win-win!
I do everything I can possibly do to go bonus points. Sometimes, if I order only one more book on my book order, I can go 500 more than points. They have special deals and promotions all year long--pay attention and become those points! I get complimentary books with every single order I place!
When you club y'all books, either with points or coin--expect for the special packs of books. For example, last yr, I got 5 Karma Wilson bear books for $xviii. I also like their non-fiction, sight word and phonics book packs.
Speaking of Scholastic--Accept you even been to one of their warehouse sales? OMG. That'due south all I'll say. Check {here} to see if or when at that place'due south a warehouse sale near y'all.
Buy Used Books
Check garage sales, library sales and used volume stores for used books.
I get a lot of books from Half Price Books. And they have a instructor disbelieve and special teacher appreciation days, likewise.
Beg
I'm not agape to practise it. Ask friends to donate the books their children have outgrown to your form. What if your friends only have extra copies of Fifty Shades of Gray lying around? Inquire them to donate them anyway. Take those books and sell them to Half-Price Books and then buy children's books with the coin!
When your parents ask you what you need for your classroom, tell them--BOOKS!
Add together an Amazon wishlist to your class blog or website.
Ask for books in lieu of Christmas and teacher appreciation gifts (Come on--do you really need another scented candle or mug?)

Happy Reading!
Hither are the labels that I utilize to organize my classroom library . I'm a footling wacky in the mode I sort my books--some are done by general categories (Animal Books, Class Favorites); some are done past genres (Fairy Tales); some are past grapheme (Maisy Books, Clifford Books) and some are washed by author (Mo Willems, Kevin Henkes, etc.) It works for the states. I want the kids to be able to hands find books and and then put them abroad when they're finished!
Download Volume Labels_Fiction
I use the tried and true colored dot sticker system to label the books. When I run out of colors, I add a colored star to the middle. For instance, all Mo Willems books have a blackness circle with a green star in the center. Between that and the labels on the bins, the kids do a pretty awesome job of keeping the library neat.
Y'all can also see I have leveled books. Those are die-cutting numbers on the blue and greenish tubs. I use Scholastic Volume Sorcerer to help me level books. I do a lot of "educated guessing" on books that aren't in their system.
I put themed books on the leaning book stand. It'south where I put most of my non-fiction books--but I only pull them for specific units (i.e. these are "Dorsum to School" books). This yr, I plan on having a more permenant expository volume section. I just have to find a place to put it! So, stay tuned...
Happy Reading!
Sight words...High Frequency Words...Pop Corn Words...Middle Words...
Whatever you telephone call them...they make up a big part of our language arts instruction. And don't you lot just dear them? Don't y'all love trying to explain why was is due west-a-s and not west-u-z. And that the o in of makes abrusk u sound, but if you lot add some other f--well and then information technology makes a short o sound again. Sigh.
Although I dearest matching games and rainbow words and flashcards and all those other bang-up ways we teach sight words, the best way to teach them is, of course, in context. So over the years, I accept made a agglomeration of sight word books. So here are the first set. I have the kids read them to themselves, so read them to 3 friends (and the friends sign the dorsum). I as well have them highlight the new word.
